Dear Rita,
How do I deal with being single on Valentine’s Day?
Well, I know from experience how annoying Valentine’s Day can be for the people who aren’t in any sort of relationship. Seeing happy couples everywhere on this particular day can be quite discouraging when you have no one to spend the day with. It’s easy to get lost in hating and dreading the day rather than appreciating it for what it is. This is a day dedicated to love. So instead of moping around, complaining that you have no significant other to spend this day with, why not show your love and appreciation for the people around you? Valentine’s Day does not have to be just about buying material things for a boyfriend/girlfriend. It can be a great way to make your loved ones’ day by doing something completely unexpected of you for them. But, if you do not feel as if that is something that you would want to do, you have the fact that Valentine’s Day is on a Saturday this year to look forward to. So, you will not have to come to school on that day and see the giant influx of teddy bears and flowers being given to the people in relationships. If you really hate Valentine’s Day, I would suggest staying home, maybe gathering a few of your other single friends together, and just get your mind off what that particular day symbolizes by finding comfort in people who share your situation. Who needs a boyfriend/girlfriend when you have great people surrounding you?
