Fall is officially here, and with it, the 2013 Steelmen Boys Cross Country season. This is an exciting year for the Steelmen runners, with a good amount of talent returning from last year’s team, and some fresh new faces to bring new life to a team that was very competitive a year ago. Head Coach, Doug Cherry is very optimistic about the upcoming season. He commented that this year’s squad has more guys returning and more experience than last year’s team, and he was very impressed with how the summer training sessions went. Sal Lazaro, a state qualifier a year ago is back, along with seniors; Caleb Hannah and Christian Stewack who will provide some good senior leadership. Coach Cherry also said to watch out for junior Jose Aguilera, with varsity experience as both a freshmen and a sophomore, expect Aguilera to be a key to the Steelmen’s season.
When asked about his expectations for this year, Coach Cherry thought his team had a strong chance of competing during the regular season, and then making a run (no pun intended) through the regionals, sectionals, and maybe even to state. A big meet for the team will be when they host the annual Steelmen Invite on September 14th as well as the Regionals. The keys for this year’s team will be to stay healthy, and for each runner to fulfill their role. If the veterans perform at their usual high level, and the younger guys step up and perform the way their coach says they will, this will be a very interesting team to watch.
