Weird: The Al Yankovic Story

Zachary Jenkins

From the man who turned such hit songs like “Smells Like Teen Spirt”, “Gangsters Paradise” and “Bad” into complete comedic parodies of themselves it is no shock that once he got his own movie he made sure that its less autobiographical and more on the satire side. The movie itself is a blast to watch, it doesn’t hide the fact that it’s a complete joke and you shouldn’t be taking it seriously. Yet with Harry Potter himself,  Daniel Radcliffe stepping up and using the infamous accordion he starts effortlessly stealing the show. One of the biggest reasons I say this movie isn’t exactly a truthful retelling of the man’s life is the character of Madonna played by Evan Rachel Wood who while already a character in real life she and Weird Al are turned up to 11 putting it lightly and are given a drug-ridden love story that blows things way out of preposition with her ultimately given a really hilarious yet interesting conclusion in the film. The film truly highlights what makes Weird Al so special, his style of comedy is so unique and truly childish in a way that just makes you smile and want to keep hearing how he can take  Michael Jackson and Queen songs and then make “Another One  Rides The Bus” and “Eat It”. One of the funniest parts of the film was the number of cameos they had of recognizable people,  David Dastmalchian, Jack Black, Seth Green, Lin- Manuel Miranda, Josh Groban, and Rainn Wilson all playing people like John Deacon, Wolfman Jack, and even random ER nurses and waiters. All and all this movie is what truly separates a good autobiography movie from a fun satire of one of the music industry’s biggest campy hits it has ever seen.
