Of course, we all know that it is important to protect our environment. But did you know that we actually have an entire club dedicated to it here at Joliet Central? Yes, there is an Environmental Awareness Club (EAC) that you can join to help support awareness that we should do things, small or large, to help protect our environment. The club’s purposes span a wide range, from promoting recycling, to conserving electricity, to using more eco-friendly appliances to help around the house. If you join you can even do some fun chemistry labs to see some very cool things!
This year already they’ve done lots of work to our school’s light court. Even if you don’t know it by name, there’s little chance you don’t know what it is. The light court is the giant field in the middle of the building that you can see from the lunch room and other parts of the building if you look out to it. (The one with the temperature and time on it.) Believe it or not, its existence there actually has a meaning! It is there to get natural sunlight into parts of the building that would otherwise be completely dark without any artificial lights on; this dramatically helps to reduce electricity costs! Some of the things EAC did to help improve the light court is they spray painted the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” arrows out there to make them more visible. They also spray painted the ivy out there, which is there to symbolize growth. Unfortunately, it is snowy out there right now so it is much harder to see the changes than when it is not covered. Be sure to check out the changes when the weather gets better! EAC is also hoping to plant some flowers later in the year, when the weather gets better.
Some time during second semester they plan on having a fundraiser to support the club through different types of school spirit items, including jewelry. They are always looking for new members to join the club. They only meet once a week, every Wednesday after school. Also it is a club so for those of you who are planning to be in NHS, it will really help your chances by adding an extra club to your schedule.
Contact Ms. Stiehr for more information regarding the club and she’s the one to talk to in order to get in. Her email is: [email protected].
