Junior reporter Jalicia Caples speaks to track coach Mrs. Heisler about her experience with track
Q: What do you like about track?
A: I like that in track and field that there is something
for everyone. There are short and long running events for those with speed or
endurance, throwing events for those with strength and agility, and jumping
events for those that possess speed and explosive power. I also enjoy its
individual events that make up a team competition, so it’s the best of both
worlds. Track and field also promotes life-long fitness, and a sense of
achieving one’s goals.
Q: What made you want to coach track?
A: Track and Field has been such a huge part of my life and
has afforded me many opportunities. I want to share my love of the sport. Plus,
it is so rewarding when you help an athlete achieve their goal. It’s the best
feeling!
Q: Did you ever run track while you were in school?
A: I ran track all four years of high school. I was all-conference,
all-area, and qualified for state all four years. I was fortunate to receive a
full scholarship to run track at Western Illinois University. Go Leathernecks!
Q: What is the most interesting thing about track?
A: I think the most interesting thing about track and field
is the constant challenge. It’s a tough sport both mentally and physically, but
the energy you feel after completing a tough workout is hard to put into words.
It’s grueling, but at the end you are rewarded with a real sense of
accomplishment. It almost makes the pain go away…almost. And no matter how hard
you work, you can always run faster, throw further, jump longer. You are
constantly pushing and challenging yourself.
Q: Would you recommend you children to run track?
A: Oh yes, my children will be fit. Our family will compete
in races when they are young; however, they do not have to be a runner. They
will be involved in clubs and athletes. I believe all sports, not just track
and field, teaches life lessons. Besides the health benefits, sports fosters
managing performance under pressure, encourages teamwork, how to handle success
and failure, and perseverance. These are invaluable lessons.
