When it comes down to cheering on the sports teams, nobody does it better than Joliet Central’s Steelettes! Led by captains Rachel Dunne, Imani Sherrod, and Espree May, these three girls are constantly working hard to boost school spirit. Rachel Dunne graciously volunteered in providing insight on the Steelettes team. Being on the team since freshman year, Rachel noticed some positive changes in the Steelette team. Rachel commented that it was very strict at first; with the new coach in place, more suggestions are made and it’s more leisurely. When asked about her relationship with the other Steelettes, Rachel said she loves working with the others and that they are very fun. The Steelette Captain was also asked if there’s anything she would like to change, to which Rachel replied, “I don’t think there’s anything I want to change. I like the direction the team is going, from last year to this year. I like the way it’s going.” Some of the goals the Steelettes have made as a whole, according to Rachel, is that they want to “change the dynamics of the culture”. She shared that in the beginning, the team’s structure was more diverse, but they are working hard to change and be more inclusive. Concluding the interview, she commented that, “It was difficult for the Steelette team during the pandemic year, since the attendance of games was optional and it was all virtual.” Now that they are back however, things are going better than ever.
