Dear Rita, how do I pick up better study habits?
The first thing you need to do is to eliminate as many forms of distraction as possible while you are studying. Don’t check your phone or email, log out of Twitter and Instagram. Also, if you really need help understanding your topic, Central has multiple after school tutoring programs available to the student body.
Dear Rita, How do I deal with a bully?
Well, the best thing to do in this case is to just ignore him/her. In most cases, a bully is someone who picks on others for the satisfaction that he/she is superior to someone, which actually gives quite the opposite effect, in my opinion. But, if you’ve tried that approach and it still isn’t working for you, then the next best thing would be to tell someone. Whether it be a parent/guardian, a teacher, counselor, friend, etc., you need to tell someone that can give you the support that you need in order to overcome this situation. One thing I would advise against is trying to “get back” at this bully in anyway. I know most people try to get some sort of revenge on someone who has done them wrong, but that is definitely not a good idea. Do the right thing by telling someone whom you trust and things will work out fine! Trust me when I say the Universe will reward you for being the better person.
Dear Rita, What’s the key to success in surviving high school?
The biggest piece of advice I can give anyone who is looking to succeed in high school is to pay attention in class and do the work assigned. That is probably the best and easiest way to ensure you do well grade-wise. When it comes to ‘surviving high school’ though, I think the main thing you need to do is to find at least one person you will be able to trust. When you find that person/group of people, you will most likely be able to get through anything that life will throw at you. A great way to make new friends is joining a club or sport that really interests you, whether that be basketball, astronomy club, track and field, theatre, and everything in between. Joliet Central has tons of organizations, so you’ll never run out of options to choose from.
