When it comes to a Thanksgiving dinner there really is no right and wrong. Typically we think a large meal with a large roasted turkey is the main dish. Non-traditional foods other than turkey are sometimes served as the main dish for a Thanksgiving dinner. So what is a good dinner for turkey day?
The main dish in my family has always been turkey but that is not what all families eat on this day for giving thanks. In some homes they have duck or goose which were traditionally for Christmas but were sometimes served in place of the thanksgiving turkey. Also along the west coast Dungeness crab is common since the crab season starts in November. In the Northeasters part of the United States the deer hunting season lies in the month of November, encouraging deer hunters to use venison as their main course. As you can see there are many main dishes that are good for thanksgiving. It’s all just an opinion.
Now that we have the main dish down what are some good side dishes? Many Americans say that a thanksgiving dinner would be incomplete without cranberry sauce, yams, and stuffing. There are also many varieties of stuffing or dressing traditionally served with the turkey. People in the south think that cornbread is the way to make it while others make it from bread. The different side dishes also very due to the different ethnic background. Southerners serve baked mac and cheese and collard greens, and some Italians serve good old lasagna. If you ask Puerto Ricans what a good side dish is they would most likely say arroz con gandules which is rice with pigeon peas. Thanksgiving as you can see has a variety of “good foods.”
