Rocky is a film about a “ Wise Guy” boxer named Rocky who’s having a tough break trying to prophyll his boxing career, while trying to survive being middle class in New York city. Rocky (Slyvester Stallone) is chosen to fight the Heavyweight Champion of the world Apollo Creed due to the original fighter he was against getting injured. While Rocky is training, he convinces run down boxing coach Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith) to help him. As he goes through his training, Rocky tentatively starts dating a woman named Adrian (Talia Shire), who tends to be very shy. On top of all of these responsibilities, Rocky tries to keep a steady income by working in a meat packing company, and works with Adrian’s drunk and abusive brother Paulie (Burt Young). Will Rocky take the gold? Well, there’s only one way to find out…“ Let’s Get Ready To Rumble!”
Talk about a film that isn’t supposed to be considered a sports film, but has sports in it. Stallone wrote the film to be a romantic drama that has sports scenes in it. Rocky was Stallone’s first film that he wrote and acted in, becoming an oscar-winning actor due to his performance. Stallone had to sell his dog to keep writing the film so that he could survive, which he got back later in his life. Additionally, there’s plenty of talented acting within the film. A great example is the late Carl Weathers, an incredibly talented actor who had a role of a lifetime. He played the cocky arrogant champion who wanted to fight someone “not as tough as him” in a burner fight, where a champ fights someone weaker and mops the floor with him. Ultimately, this is one of the greatest redemption stories in film. Stallone does a great job playing a guy who wants a good life and to be loved, and struggles to find that reciprocated. Stallone put a lot of emotion into the writing of this screenplay, shown through one of his speeches revolving around the abusive nature of his father and brother.. Because of these deep and hard writings, the emotion and genuine message is conveyed perfectly. I give this movie 8 gold bars for acting, 9 for writing, and 7 silver bars for directing. I will see you the next time you wanna come back to the movies!
