The movie “The Horse Whisperer” is about a young teen girl named Grace ( Scarlet Johansson). Who becomes physically and mentally scarred by a traumatizing accident that involved her horse named Pilgrim. As well as her best friend, after Grace is taken back home from the hospital, by her parents Annie ( Kristen Scott Thomas). As well as her dad Robert ( Sam Neil), her mom feels the only way Grace is going to be able to overcome this. Accident and the trauma is she needs to face her fears. When Annie goes to work for her magazine company, she finds a man with a way to talk to horses, a “ Horse Whisperer”. His name is Tom Booker ( Robert Redford), Annie thinks that this is the answer to the problem of her daughter traveling down a dark hole of depression that is slowly consuming Grace
I had seen this movie over the summer with my family, I was pleasantly surprised about the film. Going into the film I thought it was going to be this weak scripted, easily predictable, Chick Flick film. Robert Redford the Director/ Actor in this film really gives you a good perspective of what Grace is going through, with the use of camera angles, and use of light. The movie gives you a truly great understanding that it’s not just parents who can have problems, but that when a child has a problem. Those problems become parents’ problems as well. This film also gives a great look on how, one mother would give her whole life to see her daughter just smile again. Redford as Tom Booker, “ The Horse Whisperer”. Does a fantastic job of showcasing the true intricacies of and differences of how city folk and country folk are raised. As well as how they can get along, and that if you’re willing to learn it makes things easier. There is also a great tone of romance in this movie and a great blanket of confusion of who does Annie go with her husband that she is separated from, or Tom the Calm and stoic rancher. This film has some great acting, mainly Scarlet Johansson in one of her first films, and Redford’s eye for shots in the film. Show he has as much talent as John Ford, when Redford and Ford’s use of vast open plains that seem to go on for miles. That can almost consume a person into the feeling that they are the only one on this land. I give this film 8 gold bars for directing. 7 gold bars for acting and will see you the next time you want to come back to the movies.
