It is mid WWII, in Casablanca, the Nazis are trying to take over the country. Just the French are occupying the country, and the Nazis and the French are kicking people out of the country, who are trying to flee to America. Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) , a night club owner, is astonished to see his once true love Lisa (Ingrid Bergman), with her husband Victor Lazlo (Paul Hendrid) who is a rebel for the UK. While the Nazis are on Victor’s tail, Captain Louis Renoult (Claude Rains), could give people their freedom for a small price, but if they are caught, the deal is off, the movie’s starting, “ Time to play it again Sam”.
This is one of those movies that no matter how old you are, you know the film, or have heard of it from your family members. It is classic golden age Hollywood, with one of the first “Tough Guys” of Hollywood, Humphrey Bogart starring in it, alongside Ingrid Bergman, a very striking, female actress. They both seem to encapsulate you into the film, like you’re right there with them. Step by step, it is masterfully written and directed. This movie’s lines have been spoofed, they have also been overused; for instance, the line “here’s lookin, at you kid”, so memorable but so overused. The Simpsons have spoofed it, and while funny, it is a movie that should not be spoofed, and the reason is because it is one of those films that has stood the test of time as one of if not the greatest films of all time but looked upon as a film that will not ever be made fun of, because it is definitely one of the greatest love stories of all time of how a night club owner sees his true love come back into his life after she destroyed him, and she wants to be back in his life again, but Rick is afraid to put himself back out there for the same woman that hurt him the last time, as well as a woman who was doing the right thing by leaving him in France where he lived at the time while Hitler had just invaded, and to prevent herself from being killed or, something worse, she left him. It is beautifully shot, the ending will have you cheering. I think every person should go home and watch this film right now. I give this film 9 gold bars for writing, 9 gold bars for acting, and 10 gold bars for directing and the film as a whole. I will see you the next time you want to come back to the movies.
