River Runs Through It (1992). It is about brothers, about family, and about anguish. The Mclean family have two boys, Paul the youngest (Brad Pitt), and the oldest brother Norman (Craig Sheffer). They live in a small town in Montana where all there is is just fishing, but not just any kind of fishing, one that takes talent and time, fly fishing, and it’s not just rod, reel, and push a button then just flip the rod so the line can do the rest, this is being one with the line and the rod and one with nature. This is also about family. Paul might be good at fishing, but he is also a journalist with a shady pastime. Norman is a school teacher who wants more out of life and wants to find someone. Their father, a minister (Tom Skerrit), feels that life is what you make of it. As long as you remember who you are, and respect people, life will treat you the same. Time to watch the film “What Do You Wanna Be When You Grow Up, Hmmmm.”
Due to the passing of Robert Redford the Director, I thought that I should write about one of his best films that does not have him starring in the film. This is a perfect example of a good film, with relatable characters, and magnificent directing. Its outstanding aspects of it will make you emotional and give you a chance to think, are you getting everything out of life? And how can you change it? The absolute talent that Redford has when directing this film is beautiful, because the nature shots that are seen in the fishing scenes give off an amazing feeling of how alone they are in Montana where they are fishing, as well as how nature can be gorgeous; but it can also hurt you if you’re not careful. The acting is good but the film stands alone, only because with the way this script was written and the talent that was on all sides, this should be a top 10 movie of all time. As well as the training that was put into the film of how Brad Pitt and the other actors had to learn how to fly fish. Lastly, I truly have a soft spot for the way Tom Skerrits’ character is written, and how stoic he is. To continue he gives his boys thoughts on how they should live their life, and he knows that they listen to him. What matters is if they take it to heart. Overall I give this movie six gold bars, I give 9 silver bars for acting, 10 Gold bars for writing and directing. I will see you the next time you want to come back to the movies.
