Big Business Man, Bill Parish (Anthony Hopkins ) is about to celebrate his 65th birthday with his family, until trouble in his company arises and his favorite daughter Susan (Clari Florloni) is not sure if she truly loves the man that she thinks she does. Not everything could be as bad as it seems, when an uninvited guest comes to the parish’s home: Joe Black (Brad Pitt).
This is a tear jerker in its most real form. It is a movie about losing a loved one, and also finding true love, as well as the true nature of that sooner or later, we all will pass.
It is a very underrated film of the 90’s that had mixed reviews from people because some only saw the film as depressing and negative. The critics that see the true beauty in it and that you only get one life, that makes it the best, because once you have to cash in your chips, it’s all over, that is what the true theme is.
The acting is truly amazing. Hopkins truly gives the best performance of the film about a real guy. Supporting his family while also supporting his own life, and also dealing with some personal health secrets from his family.
Florloni shows how a daughter cares for her father, and that she can tell when he is hiding something from her, but the only time that a daughter becomes blind to a fathers emotions is when a love interest comes into the picture.
Lastly, Pitt plays the quiet, almost confused character of the film, playing one of life’s most feared beings in the world.Pitt also gives a performance that at times almost seems like he is playing a child seeing things for the first time.
Lastly, Pitt grabs you in as investing a role where having a blank expression is very creepy no matter who the actor is. Brest does a great job directing this film, using natural light and shadows to give a feeling of unsettling awareness, or an uneasy feeling. For example, when Joe is first entered into the film, Hopkins can hear him in his study, but he can’t see him, and at times you can see a figure walking around the study, but you’re not sure if you’re looking in the right location.
I enjoyed this film and I give it a 9.5; I give directing 8 gold bars; acting gets 10 bars; and script writing gets 8.5 gold bars. I will see you the next time you want to come back to the movies.
