This song by American electronic indie/pop band Passion Pit, definitely calls for an acquired taste. It was released on September 8th, 2008 and was featured on the band’s first ever EP called “Chuck of Change.” This song written by American singer and songwriter, Michael Angelakos, is said to be about how he would always sleep in later than he should and his girlfriend at the time would get upset and scream about it, hence the name “Sleepyhead” and the song reflects the intense ways she would scream about his extreme sleeping hours. Although that is quite a literal meaning, most listeners believe it is the true meaning but some on Reddit think it’s about an ex-girlfriend getting tired of him, which both the explanations tie together anyway. Both of the said meanings portray the girlfriend getting tired of him either for his sleeping habits or just in general. Although this song is from 2008, it recently became popular during the summer of 2025 on social media app, TikTok, especially the sampled song. In the reveal trailer for the game LittleBigPlanet 2, this song was used and was also used in some of the games sound track.
The beginning of this song is sampled from a 1958 Irish folk song called “Óró Mó Bháidín” by Mary O’hara. Listening to this song definitely makes you question if you really like it or if you just like the beats because the singer Michael Angelakos has a different and unique voice. It is somewhat high pitched and it differs from any other singer in the indie/pop genre. Most pop or indie songs you hear nowadays have one voice the whole time and a distinct rhythm but this song is full of tons of different varieties of rhythms, voices, and sounds. The singer’s voice really ties it all together and the electronic noises are definitely one of the best things included. The song is just very unique and full of a ton of beats and noises such as clapping, electronic music, angelical screaming, harmonic voices etc. which I think that’s what people love about it. If you listen to rap or classical music or pretty much anything besides indie or pop, then you may not enjoy this song due to the tone and rhythms but it’s always worth a listen! The Irish song is very classical so when it gets paired with this super upbeat and jam packed song, then it creates a new dimension of sounds.
Personally, I think the song sounds nostalgic and reminds me of a bunch of colors and unicorns like a big bundle of rainbow joy. To some, that’s a bad thing but I really love this song. It’s different from most, which makes it appealing since it’s very catchy. When it all crashes together it feels very pacted and nosey which you may hear in some of today’s songs but it doesn’t really feel the same. I give this song 4 out of 5 stars because I mean you can’t really hate it, it’s just so happy. I’m not sure if you would enjoy this song but it’s always worth a listen because you don’t know before you try!
