Every year, on February 14th, many people celebrate a holiday known as Valentine’s day. The thought of this day will most likely bring pictures of romance and love into your mind, but what is this day really about? The origin of Saint Valentine’s Day, also known as the Feast of Saint Valentine has a lot of different stories revolving around how it started. The most popular one is about Valentinus. In the legend it says the Emperor Claudius of Rome ruled out marriage because he believed being single improved solider performance. Valentinus performed secret marriage ceremonies in spite of the new rule. When Claudius found out, people revolted. This day, which was originally on February 15th, was then celebrated annually for centuries, and traditions that we continue today such as giving gifts and cards to your significant other began. Europe modified this holiday sometime in the 18th century to a new date, February 14th, the start of birds’ mating season. Changing this holiday helped the idea that Valentine’s Day is all about romance. Today, we carry on the traditions from 14th century Rome in celebration of Saint Valentine’s Day.
