Day of the Dead or better known as Día de Muertos is a Mexican holiday where people will honor the souls of their loved ones who have passed. During these ceremonies people will build altars in their homes with oferendas for their loved ones’ souls. Families will often read letters and poems, they will also offer tamales, chili’s, drinks, and pan de muerto. People will also put marigolds with a strong scent to guide the souls to their homes. Families will clean the graves at these cemeteries to prepare for the spirit of their loved ones to come. On November 2 people will take food to these cemeteries to attract the spirits and get them to come and celebrate with them. They will have bands perform and attendees will sing and dance to please the souls. Dia de Muertos has been a religious tradition that has been celebrated for many many years, popularized as part of their national culture.
