The Joliet Central Steelmen Security team is one of the major parts of this school’s community and to showcase their importance to the school, they were interviewed and asked a series of questions about the student environment, and also what they would like to see kids do more of to better themselves and the people around them.
John Greendige, the first security guard interviewed, stated in hopes of making students grow as people. “I wish that kids would have respect for themselves, teachers, and parents, and most people who don’t have respect for themselves blame people for other things.”
Nate King followed and gave a mixture of team spirit and stated the misconception about security that students have. King noted, “We are not here to get them [students] in trouble but to keep them out of trouble. If they could understand that we were in the same situation as them, of being kids once and it is hard for kids to take orders, but the disrespect given is coming from a lack of understanding”, answered King.
Derrick Martin, he sees himself as a silent mentor ,who feels small gestures make the biggest differences.“It’s the kids in this school, and my family, I wake up in my home and see my family, and once I get into this school I am in my other home, and I look at everyone as my kids, and because of me taking care of them I also listen to how they feel, and understand what they look for.” said Martin
Lastly Dwayne Edmon explains the emotional side of being a security guard at Central, by showing that they do what is right, even when kids or adults may not agree.“When I see kids, I know they graduate, and do well in class. I start crying, because I am proud of helping this kid reach their goals”, he stated.
Overall the purpose that the Joliet Central security team has, is to protect the people inside the building day in and day out. All through the spirit, and pride, and care that they show and give to everyone in the school, past and present.
