The 2024 Winter Assembly started at 2:30, the choir singing their rendition of the National Anthem as the gym stood facing the flag the JROTC color guard was presenting. Afterward, the 2023-2024 winter sports were introduced, such as boy’s and girl’s basketball, boy’s and girl’s wrestling, competitive cheer, and the Steelettes, who took 1st Place at the Mahomet- Seymour Invite, 1st Place IDTA Maine South Hip Hop AAA Category, and 2nd Place IHSA 3A Division. To no one’s surprise, competitive cheer received the loudest cheers and applause. Clubs were also introduced, such as Fearless Females, Astronomy Club, Senior Class, Photo Club, and Speech Team. When the presentation of sports and clubs ended, competitive cheer went on to give an impressive performance with lots of flying and strong cheers, which received loud applause.
Next came the Snowman race, where a teacher would stand still as two of their students wrapped them in toilet paper, and finish it off with a carrot being put onto them. The sponsors were Goberville of the Astronomy Club, Hoyt of Speech, Shaw of the Photo Club, and Chaulk of the Social Studies Department. Chaulk and his students started great, and they ultimately won. Then came the relay race with each class competing with each other. First, they started with someone spinning 15 times, then trying to sit down on a balloon and pop it. After that, the second person would try to knock down the “bowling pins,” (they were empty gallons.) Once they completed that task, they would have to ice skate (they slide across the gym floor with empty boxes.) They would skate to the last person waiting, where they would have to scooter back to the starting line. Seniors won, of course. To which the assembly finished off with a shouting competition between each class.
