Wrestling is a sport that tests the endurance and strength to two men of the same size and weight. In the ring for six minutes, the wrestler with the most skill and endurance will outlast the opponent will win the match. Matches can last up to ten minutes, depending on the amount of over time, it is not unusual for men to be sore and weak after the match. Before the match, wrestlers practice almost every day of the week.
Interviewing senior wrestler, Will Brady, we learned quite a few things about the wrestling agenda. Brady believes that this year’s team has a lot of potential, and that every member should give it 100 percent. When asked about incoming wrestlers next year, Brady said “Follow all the traditions, and live up to your coaches’ expectations.” Brady has been wrestling for four years now, and believes these words of wisdom may help future wrestlers.
The wrestling season lasts from November to February, and through these four months the athletes go under rigorous and physically draining practices leading up to their matches and tournaments. Brady believes the coaches have quite a bit of experience, and know what they are talking about so they are leading this year’s team on a winning path. Brady said his favorite tournament tends to be the Lincoln Tournament because of all the rough competition. Brady also went on to say “West is our toughest competition not just because of the cross town rivalry, but because they receive almost the same exact training as we do.”
Brady stated that every year the team looks forward to being at All Conference, but everyone must balance their studies. “It isn’t too hard to balance your studies and be a good athlete, all you need to do is stay focused,” Brady added.
Brady went on to add that wrestling is his favorite of all the sports he plays, and said that just like in every other sport, athletes should follow a code of conduct. “Always do the right thing…even when nobody is looking,” Brady said. Wrestling is a tough sport to take part in, but the reward of accomplishing such a physically draining match is much greater than the sacrifices you make.
