Monte Carlo Rally

Carlos Orellana

Imagine going around a mountain at 70 miles per hour and hitting a patch of ice but instead of falling off to your death you skid around the tight hairpin and into the next corner, this is the great Monte Carlo Rally. Plagued with horrible weather and terrifying conditions making it through here and not crashing is nothing but a miracle.

The track was filled with ice and was slippery with the course being set up differently then normal races each competitor goes through a section of the race called a stage, the person who gets the best time on the stage wins the stage whoever wins the most stages wins the race, the first person to complete the stage isn’t always the winner.

9 time world champion, Sébastien Loeb (now the oldest WRC rally winner)  and Isabel Gsamiche (a math teacher by day and rally legend by night) aren’t just miracle makers, they are nothing short of the gods of the track. Through the blistering cold and falling snow they were able to secure first place without much issue. Some drivers aren’t as lucky though, French rally driver Adrien Fourmaux and co-driver Alexandre Coria were in the first big crash of the season. The car went into a rock wall, bounced and hit a barrier before rolling several times, both the driver and the co-driver are okay despite the extensive damage to the car. Shake down was eventful as well with some insane times.

To sum up all of the events that happened that day; the track was filled with ice and slippery with the course being set up differently than normal races. Each competitor goes through a section of the race called a stage, the person who gets the best time on the stage wins the stage whoever wins the most stages wins the race, the first person to complete the stage isn’t always the winner.
