Joliet Central High School honored senior musician Brian Baron with an enthusiastic send-off on January 28th in the Field House Atrium after he earned first place in the Illinois Music Education Association (ILEMA) Student Composition Contest.
This recognition allowed for Brian to attend and perform at the Illinois Music Education Conference in Peoria on January 30th, where top student musicians from across the state were showcased. Brian has been part of the Joliet Central band since his freshman year, dedicating countless hours to his skill as a performer. His winning piece was selected from entries statewide and recognized for its creativity and structure. This award is considered one of the highest honors for young composers in Illinois.
During the celebration, Brian walked across the atrium with his bandmates followed by music. Students, teachers and administrators including, Assistant Principal, Mr. Locke and, Assistant Director of Athletics & Activities, Lisa Luangsomkham gathered to applaud his achievement. As a highlight, Baron performed his original composition live at a conference. The event brought a strong sense of pride to the school community, students surrounded the atrium with cheers and congruity and teachers expressed how Brian’s success reflects the dedication of the entire Joliet Central music program.
Band Director, Mr. Stinson, described Brian as, “hardworking, humble, and passionate about performing”.
Brian’s accomplishments build excitement for other music performances. On April 15, 2026, Joliet Central Symphonic band will join Joliet West Symphonic band and Joliet American Legion Band for a special concert at Chicago’s Symphony Center. With the support of his school, Brian now heads to Peoria to represent Joliet Central statewide and continue his musical journey.
