Want to become more involved with school activities, but unsure how to start? Well here’s some intel on how Joliet Central’s most involved student and Steelwomen of the Year 2026, Jessica Martinez does it! Jessica wasn’t always involved with school activities; she started off her high school experience as an introvert freshman year off with only joining student council. During this experience, she made friendships that brought her to join other school activities to spend time with them outside of school hours. Peers of Jessica recognized her strengths and suggested clubs and organizations they knew she would be a positive contribution to. Sophomore year, she explored more interests and joined Key Club in addition to Student Council. Later in Junior year, she became Student Council Vice President and Junior Class Committee President, with these positions she joined Presidents club while being a member of Key Club, and a News Anchor. Senior year, she contributed to many roles such as President of Student Council and Fearless Females, News Anchor, Developmental Editor, Member of 4 Honor Societies, Member of Yearbook, and ESRP Researcher for Argonne National Laboratory, and a Member of Presidents club. All of these roles lead to winning the National Scholarship for the National Association of Student Councils Organization (NASC), NASSP Student Service Grant Recipient, Student of the Month for March, and Steelwomen of 2026! Managing multiple roles while maintaining Honors and AP classes can become overwhelming, but Jessica manages by keeping a planner to keep track of all the assignments and activities. Jessica’s words of advice for students looking to be more involved is to simply be kind to others. So it is important to be kind because one may not know what’s truly going on in another person’s mind. Communication is key to becoming involved with activities or individuals.
